Chapter Ten
White Bear
âIn war, you win or lose, live or die
â and the difference is just an eyelash.â
Douglas MacArthur

14 February
Teams Three and Four took over the perimeter while Team Two went inside Valhalla. Several members of the team had to have wounds treated from being struck with large rocks or tree branches. They were fortunate that there were no broken bones but several of them would be sore for a while, Clark included.
Clark, Murdock, Gideon, and Greyeagle all entered the Command Module to find their VIP, Jay Matoskah, already waiting. Winter was sitting beside him while he was brewing coffee.
âGentlemen,â said Saunders, âMay I present Master Gunnery Sergeant (Retired) Jay Matoskah. Former Marine Force Recon, Scout Sniper, and member of the original Wild Hunt team.â
âNice to meet you, sir,â said Clark.
âSir,â said Murdock, nodding.
âGrandfather,â said Greyeagle, smiling.
âHi, Jay,â said Gideon. âGood to see you, again.â
Jay sat the coffee to brew, then turned to greet the newcomers.
âCaptain Clark,â said Jay, âI have heard good things about you. My grandson speaks highly of you.â
He paused to shake Clarkâs hand. Clark was impressed with the strength in his grip. Moving to Murdock, he clasped his hand and looked him in the eyes.
âDid Gideon tell you that we both knew your grandfather?â asked Jay. âCharlie was a good friend and a hell of an officer. I can see him in you. You look very much like him, as he looked when I first met him.â
âNo, sir,â said Murdock, glancing at Gideon.
âI did a double-take the first time I saw him,â said Gideon. âI thought Charlie was back.â
âThe resemblance is uncanny,â said Jay, nodding at Gideon.
âThank you, sir,â said Murdock.
âYou have his drive to excel,â said Jay. âIt was one of the things I admired about your grandfather. He never wanted to be anything but the best, never content to be second at anything. I think he would be pleased to find you with this team. After all, he helped in the creation of it.â
âI never knew that,â said Murdock.
âNot many do,â said Jay. âThe formation of this team is still held as closely guarded a secret as its very existence. A word of advice, if you donât mind?â
âGo ahead, sir,â said Murdock.
âDo not feel that you are competing with the legend of your grandfather,â said Jay. âWhether you realize it or not, you are already building one of your own. He would be very proud of you, of that, I am absolutely certain.â
Murdock nodded but said nothing. Clark could tell by the look on his face that Jay had given him a lot to think about. Gideon clasped Jayâs hand and they smiled at each other.
âHow many years have we been playing this game?â asked Jay.
âFar more than I care to admit,â said Gideon.
âIt is good to see you, old friend,â said Jay.
âYou, too,â said Gideon, smiling.
âGrandfather,â said Greyeagle, smiling.
Instead of an answer, he drew him into an embrace and hugged him. After a moment, he released Greyeagle and patted him on the cheek, touching the scars.
